Loring (1874-1930) the younger of the Underwood brothers was known to be the more conservative, less flamboyant one. He toured European gardens, studied at the Ecole d'Horticulture in Paris and later became one of the first American professional landscape architects. He spent his life meditating between the natural and urban industrial worlds. Loring used full-color Autochrome plates for these images of gardens and landscaping.
